So, are video games art or not? Since this blog is written by a gamer it may be a bit biased. However, I will try to be neutral just for this blog post. That being said, yes videogame is indeed art. This is my unbiased opinion.
We all know that a biased opinion qualifies as an unbiased opinion if you clearly state “this is my unbiased opinion”
The only right way to go about this is to go step by step and let you decide for your self.
What is art?
I did a simple google search and according to Wikipedia “Art is a diverse range of human activities involving the creation of visual, auditory or performing artifacts (artworks), which express the creator’s imagination, conceptual ideas, or technical skill, intended to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”
No matter how you want to look at it video games fit the basic definition of art.
Due to advancements in technology, the canvas has expanded and now art can exist in the digital space. The fact that video games only exist in the digital space may be the main reason why people are so skeptical in accepting it as indeed art.
Videogames and traditional art
The fact that videogames utilize most traditional forms of art is often brushed aside. These forms include sculpting, theatre, and music. These are the basis of 3D modeling, storytelling, and soundtracks utilized in videogames.
Videogame creators have the capability of creating a beautiful world from scratch and complement the experience by telling a well-crafted story coupled with top-notch soundtracks. This is of course not the case for all the videogames. Some are just trash.
This of course goes for visual arts or any other form. Not all of them are epic.
Video game as art vs Mona Lisa
Comparing a video game to your favorite piece of art may be the main reason why you would not want a video game to be listed along with great pieces like Mona Lisa. I partially agree with this. Nothing good ever comes from a blatant comparison like this anyway.
But appreciating them individually in their own right makes life easier.
I know this blog did not let you decide anything as promised. And it was mostly one-sided but I am sure you got my main point which is- a biased opinion qualifies as an unbiased opinion if you clearly state “this is my unbiased opinion”
Cheers.
